Report of the Irish Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse Executive Summary
The Irish commission to Inquire into Child Abuse was established in 2000 to investigate abuse of children in institutions. They lead a nine-year-long inquiry into child abuse at Catholic institutions in Ireland in the past 60 years. This is an executive summary of their findings and recommendations. The inquiry has found that physical and emotional abuse and neglect were features of institutions. Of the 35,000 children placed in the network of reformatories, industrial schools and workhouses, 2,000 told the Commission they suffered
physical and sexual abuse while there.
