Serbia 14,000 children live below poverty line
9 Oct 2011 | child poverty
‘B92’ reports that 14,000 children live below the poverty line in Serbia. Roma, children without parental care and disabled children are in the worst position. Labor and Social Policy Minister Rasim Ljajić pointed out that every 14th child lived below the poverty line in 2008 and that every eighth child lives in such conditions in 2011. The minister stressed that the fact that about 48,000 people were getting their meals at soup kitchens and that 6,221 of them were children was alarming. Despite the grim statistics, Serbia has made progress in protecting children’s rights.
