Moldova Abandoned in Russian Federation: seven Moldovan children are returned

Chisinau, Moldova: A new repatriation mission of seven Moldovan minors was successfully carried out by the Ministry of Social Protection, Family and Children (MSPFC) of Moldova in cooperation with Terre des hommes Foundation in Moldova. Seven minors from 3 to 14 years old are hailed from different rural communities of Moldova and Transnistria. They were taken a few years ago to the Russian Federation by their parents and subsequently abandoned. Shortly after that, these minors were identified and assisted by Russian social services.

After their repatriation to Moldova, four out of the seven children will be returned to their biological or extended families. The remaining three children are temporarily accommodated at the Centre for Temporary Placement and Rehabilitation of Minors (The Ministry of Health) until the most proper form of protection is identified by Moldovan tutelary authorities.

In 2009, Moldovan National Authorities have carried out 10 repatriation missions of 22 Moldovan children (7 minors were identified in Ukraine, 13 in the Russian Federation, 1 in Sweden and 1 in Romania). This fact highlights the effectiveness of the application of the Child Protection System of the official Moldovan authorities, which was created in 2005 with the support of Tdh/FACT. [NM]
