Italy Afghan teens found under Rome rail stations
2 Apr 2009 |
The shocking discovery of 24 Afghan children living below a Rome rail station was reported in several worldwide newspapers during the week-end. The reports contain divergences on the ages of the children and on their living conditions. However, their situation is unanimously described as shocking and the authorities already acknowledged the need of reinforcing Roma’s social safety net. The children reportedly travelled through Turkey and Greece. According to the figures quoted from Save the Children, the number of unaccompanied Afghan minors has risen dramatically in Rome during the recent years. The number of them who asked for asylum rose from 32 in 2004 to 264 in 2007.
