European Union Anti-trafficking actions and HRBA in South Asia: Outcomes and links with Europe
2 Feb 2009 |
Brussels, Belgium – 24-25 February 2009: The seminar aims at sharing the achievements, obstacles and outcomes of the regional Terre des hommes consortium co-funded project “Developing a rights-based approach for anti-trafficking actions in South Asia” and exchanging experience on Terre des hommes running anti-trafficking activities in Europe. It will be hosted and chaired by Member of European Parliament, Mrs Luybcheva, promoter of the recently adopted European Parliament Declaration n. 50 on the fight against Child Trafficking (adopted in October 2008). Members of the European Parliament and Representatives of the European Commission will bring a critical view on the outcomes and recommendations issued by the project and present an overview of EU policy and strategy to combat trafficking.
The seminar will as well present TDHIF report on children on the move titled: “Kids abroad: ignore them, abuse them, or protect them?” (Mike Dottridge, October 2008). Based on field research techniques, the report addresses a series of specific recommendations towards governments, NGOs, International organisations, civil society actors and communities, and intergovernmental actors including the EU on how to better protect children on the move. The presentation of the report is an opportunity to broaden up the debate from only trafficking of children to also one on protection of migrant children and receive the perspective on this of Members of the European Parliament and Commission.
The photo exhibition “Another Me” (Achinto Bhadra, 2007) will be displayed alongside the seminar. Through the moving pictures, girls under the care of the Indian NGO, Sanlaap, show their history of vulnerability, but also their strengths and hopes for the future.
