Austria Anti-Trafficking Day events in Vienna, Austria

On the occasion of the EU Anti-Trafficking-Day, the Austrian Task Force on Combating Human Trafficking is organizing an all-day event on 15 October 2010 at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna. The event will include the exhibition “Human Trafficking – Slavery of the 21st century”.

In addition, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is presenting the Buy Responsibly campaign in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry of European and International Affairs as head of the Austrian Task Force against Human Trafficking, the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Museumsquartier Wien.

Ambassador Laura Thompson, Deputy Director General of IOM, as well as Ambassador Elisabeth Tichy-Fisslberger, National Coordinator on Trafficking in Human Beings and Chairperson of the Task Force against Human Trafficking of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, and Colonel Gerald Tatzgern, Head of the Centre on Smuggling and Human Trafficking, Austrian Criminal Intelligence Service, will present the “Buy Responsibly” campaign against human trafficking at the press conference which will take place on 15 October 2010 at 1:15 p.m. in the Barock Suite C of the Museumsquartier, Museumsplatz 1 – 1070 Vienna.

The campaign, which has already been implemented in Brussels and Geneva, draws consumers’ attention to their vital role in combating human trafficking. The campaign emboldens consumers to look at what’s behind the things they buy. It encourages consumers to change their purchasing habits to thereby influence the conditions under which the goods or services were produced. For the visual aspect of the campaign, an oversized, upside-down shopping cart (5 × 4.7 m) will be displayed in front of the Museumsquartier in Vienna from 14 – 19 October 2010 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. After being displayed in Vienna, the campaign will stop at other European cities.
