International Children on the move vs. child trafficking and what do we prevent

1136_tdhif_new_logo_smallThe Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights organised a 2-day seminar “A Human Rights Approach to Combating Human Trafficking: Challenges and Opportunities” on 27 – 28 May 2010 (Palais des Nations, Geneva). Terre Des Hommes International Federation made a statement: (…) “It is often believed that the majority of separated children moving within or across countries end up exploited and trafficked. Whilst TDH recognizes that this remains the case for many separated children, it also points out to existing evidence showing the positive impact migration has on human development, including children. In 2008, the organization commissioned a study on the various existing practices of protection of children on the move. The author of the study, Mike Dottridge, concluded that while there are some good practices succeeding in protecting children on the move, there are also substantial concerns, as many service providers fail in finding the right balance between the right of the child to protection versus his or her other rights. (…)"
