Europe Children without borders
23 Jan 2009 |
The “International Herald Tribune” published a long opinion piece about the phenomenon of unaccompanied minors in Europe. The Professor of Immigration Law recognizes the human rights violation that happens when children arriving in Italy from Greece are hauled back to Greece where there is a total lack of protection offered to them. Yet he argues, if Italy had to deal with all the minors arriving on their shores, the systems would simply collapse and the same “Squalor and chaos” would be transferred to Italy as it is now in Greece. He argues that only EU funded and supervised institutions in countries of origin could deal with the growing humanitarian problem – and he also suggests that repatriation under international auspices should also be strengthened.
