Cyprus Current regulations for adoption are “inefficient”
25 Oct 2011 | adoption
‘Cyprus Mail’ reports that the welfare department has over 250 cases of adoption pending since 2010, having only processed with 67 cases. The current legislation is extremely anachronistic and had many loopholes that could be exploited for baby trafficking. Due to the very slow procedure of adoption applications, many couples were forced to arrange their adoptions privately, often being victims of exploitation. A new bill has just been completed by the welfare department, after a preparation process that started in late 2008. The new bill is expected to close all existing loopholes, with the emphasis placed on the human rights of the baby at every stage of the adoption procedure.
