Malta Eleven babies needed opioid replacement treatment at birth in 2010

‘The Malta Independent Online’ reports that according to a national report published,13 babies born to women attending the Substance Misuse Outpatient Unit in 2010, 11 newborn babies needed opioid replacement treatment after birth. The report, which examined new developments and trends in the drug situation in Malta, found that some 1,936 individuals made use of the available drug agencies and services in Malta during 2010. Over 50% of first-treated clients had children, with 52% having one child and 32% having two children. In all, 24 of 36 care orders issued in 2010 were to drug-using parents, and 63 children of drug-using parents were fostered.
