Europe EU states criticised for human rights violations

11 Jan 2009 |

The ‘EU Observer’ made a summary of the recent report by the Human Rights Watch about the human rights issues in Europe. The report is critical of Europe’s migration and asylum policies which remain focused on keeping irregular migrants, including children, out of the EU rather than ensuring their rights are protected. The common standards that will come into effect in 2010 will allow the detention of undocumented migrants, including unaccompanied children for up to 18 months, something that even the UN high commissioner for human rights criticized in October 2008.
