European Union EU states granted protection to 78 800 asylum seekers in 2009

‘Sofia Echo’ reports that according to figures released on World Refugee Day (June 20) the member states of the EU granted protection to 78,800 asylum seekers in 2009, 3700 more than the previous year. The largest group comes from Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan. More than three quarters of protection orders were made in the UK, Germany, France, Sweden, Italy and the Netherlands.
