Europe Europe must deliver a common immigration policy, say MEPs

20 Apr 2009 |

The European Parliament’s website released a press release saying the European Parliament – in an own-initiative report – is proposing a blue-print for a common policy on European immigration. The report talks both about legal migration, recognizing the need in Europe for an estimated 60 million migrant workers by 2050, but also about illegal migration, which is currently the biggest problem facing Europe. The report supports the integration of migrants in member states, including assistance to learn the language and develop an understanding of the values of the EU and its member states. The European Parliament expressed shock at the human tragedy caused by illegal migration: the rapporteur stated that in 2008 more migrants lost their lives at sea that in the war in Gaza. The report makes several recommendations how to tackle this problem.
