Spain Grim toll of African refugees mounts on Spanish beaches

12 Jul 2008 |

The ‘Guardian’ reports that this Summer a number of tragic deaths of African migrants wanting to reach Spain by boat were reported in Spanish media. In one of the cases nine children have died during the trip from hunger or thurst. Aid agencies claim that the recent crackdown on illegal immigration is worsening the crisis by encouraging migrants to make riskier and longer journeys. According to the article, the choice of destination is now Almeria but the gruelling 100-mile journey between Morocco and Almeria means an estimated one in three dinghies never arrives.
