Europe Gypsy girls' corpses on beach fail to put off sunbathers
17 Jul 2008 |
‘The Guardian’ quotes several Italian media outlets reflecting on an incident on the beaches of Naples. Apparently four Roma girls were begging or selling things on the beach at Torregaveta, and in a tragic attempt at trying the waters, two have drowned. Italian sunbathers carried on their usual holiday routine as the corpses were lying on the beach, waiting for the morgue to take them away. This unusual lack of sympathy comes at a time when Italy is gripped by anti-Gypsy sentiments (see our earlier coverage on the of fingerprinting Roma). Also see the Guardian’s summary on the issue here.
