Moldova Human trafficking issue broached at highest level in Moldova

Comment : According to the Moldovan News Agency ‘AIS moldpres’, the Moldovan President chaired a meeting on June 30th of the Supreme Security Council on two issues, one being the fight against human trafficking. Participants presented data showing serious gaps in the Ministry of Interior’s Centre Combating Human Trafficking’s activities. Furthermore allegations were made that the Centre’s employees accepted bribes in exchange for trafficking services. According to reports, 20% of the money extorted by traffickers of illegal migrants was passed to employees of the Centre . Also, tourism agencies facilitate the trafficking of Moldovans abroad. The president, Mr. Voronin asked bodies in charge of the issue to quickly adopt a comprehensive plan of measures which would lead to concrete results. He concluded that the issue of human trafficking is of utmost importance for ensuring the interests and security of Moldovan citizens, but, he said, it is also a question of prestige, of Moldova s image.
