Hungary Hungarian kids like school but drink, smoke too much

11 Sep 2009 |

  • According to an OECD study on child welfare published in Wednesday’s Nepszabadsag daily, Hungarian children receive better health care services than most of their peers in OECD countries, but they also drink and smoke more. Every eleventh child fell below the poverty line in Hungary compared to an OECD average, and Hungary ranked twelfth for the quality of its public education and seventh in the category of ‘quality of life in school’. Smoking statistics for youth put Hungary in the fourth worse position. For alcohol consumption among 13-15 year olds, Hungary ranked sixth worse with 23 percent of children in this age group claiming to have been drunk at least twice in their life.
