Macedonia "I will try to convince my editor to work on child trafficking after this training"
Project : EIDHR 25 Apr 2009 |
Skopje, Macedonia: *Local radio and television channels’ journalists participated in the third training for journalists in Skopje on 29 April, 2009. 15 journalists were invited from six cities of Macedonia to share experiences of reporting on child trafficking in local media.
How media can contribute to increased awareness raising in local communities? What role media can play in prevention targeting the most vulnerable segments of the society? The training aimed at answering those questions and train journalists on the root causes, consequences and trends of child trafficking. Presentations also covered the ethical principles and rules of reporting on child trafficking cases.
At the second part of the training, the journalists worked in groups on three case studies of the last year press monitoring identifying common mistakes and good practices of reporting. The challenge remains the same how to put ethical considerations into practice. As one journalist from the Skopje TV channel said during the training: “how to keep in mind all the standards we learnt during the training and at the same time being able to write interesting and good articles?” Other challenges such as the lack of recognition of the importance of the topic by editors and low number of specialized journalists on social issues were also highlighted.
