‘The Telegraph’ reports that according to Barnardo’s the use of technology such as the internet and instant messages in targeting children has ‘markedly increased’ over the past year. Grooming of children often happens through these online fora, encouraging children to take explicit photographs of themselves. Barnardo’s survey showed that the number of sexually exploited children it is working with rose by 8.4 percent in 2011 to reach 1,190. At the same time conviction rates are still low while the process itself is traumatic for the young victims.
