Bulgaria On the human trafficking black list
14 Jun 2009 |
- Bulgaria’s State Agency for Nationals Security (DANS) arrested two lawyers over illegal baby trafficking on the 17 June 2009. The lawyers were part of a group involved in selling new born babies to Greek families wishing to adopt children. The lawyers, allegedly, convinced pregnant women to sell their babies for BGN 3,000 to 5,000 and then resold them to Greek families for EUR 30,000 to 40,000 depending on the baby’s sex with boys costing more than girls. The arrests happened on the same day when the U.S State department negatively assessed the situation of trafficking in Bulgaria in its TIP report.
