France Parisians fight plans for Gypsy camp

9 Jan 2012 | integration roma

‘The Wall Street Journal’ reports that the mayor of Paris wants to create a campsite for ‘gens de voyage’ or travelers, as required by EU law- in the 16th district, which is one of the luxurious districts of the city. District residents oppose the plans, since the camp site would be built on a highly valuable property in the middle of the city, while the city administration argues, that Roma need to be able to live not in the outskirts but where jobs and health care are accessible. While the city should have accommodated 200 campers, it has set aside no space so far.
