Albania Promises to orphans should be a serious commitment
16 May 2009
- ‘Amnesty International’ published a public statement on the eve of National Orphan’s Day (May 20), calling on the Albanian government and local authorities to ensure that orphan students who have been raised in state orphanages, and who are due shortly to graduate from high school, are granted their right, under Albanian law, to housing and employment. These 14-year-olds have nowhere to go after graduation and are extremely vulnerable to being stigmatised and socially excluded and may end up living in poverty and sharing rooms in squalid, dilapidated buildings.
