Romania Roma plight surfaces again in Baia Mare

8 Sep 2011 | housing roma

Months after a controversy surrounding the building of a segregation wall, Baia Mare has again come under fire. City authorities say they plan to relocate over 2,000 Roma who live mostly in makeshift dwellings. They will be moved to a yet-to-be-built neighbourhood for social cases outside the city on the banks of the Craica River. According to the US Embassy in Bucharest, the Roma inhabitants were not notified of the planned demolition, while Mayor Catalin Chereches insists that the US Embassy had been deliberately misinformed by NGOs, and the Roma were informed. Chereches was wondering why “Does anyone want these people to keep living in the same dire conditions instead of offering them a decent standard of living?"
