‘Nine O’Clock’ reports that Romania is first in Europe when it comes to the number of underage mothers and third in what concerns the number of abortions. According to the National Statistics Institute, after the Revolution the average number of underage mothers grew to 8,500 per year. UNICEF’s 2009 ‘The Progress of Nations’ report shows that in Romania 43 out of every 1,000 women that give birth are underage. According to the statistics, underage mothers generally come from broken homes, live in rural areas and have a low level of education, including sexual and contraceptive education.
