Romania Romania's child brides

29 Jun 2011 Early marriages roma

‘Guardian’ – as part of a their International Development Journalism competition – published an article on early marriages in Roma communities. According to the article, early marriage is a tradition, which has economical benefits but leaves young girls unprotected. While any Roma child has difficulties attaining higher education, girls face even bigger challenges since they are “not supposed to work”. This also leads to high extent of isolation and defencelessness. British media coverage has attracted the attention of NGOs and other Child Protection Agencies in order to take a bigger role in child protection in the future.
