Romania Romania's orphanages: Locking the past away

29 Nov 2011 | deinstitutionalization state care homes

‘The Independent’ reports on the changes that took place in Romania’s orphanages in the past twenty years. When the charity, Hope and Homes for Children started work in Romania in 1994, there were more than 100,000 children in orphanages. Now there are only 6,500 and the plan is to take every single child out of the orphanages and close them all down by 2020. The tragic thing is that most of the children in the orphanages aren’t actually orphans. They do have families of their own, but families that were unable, for various reasons, to look after them. Hope and Homes for Children, in close partnership with Absolute Return for Kids (Ark), has enabled Romania to lead the field in dei-nstitutionalization.

The statistics in this article are not correct. This NGO seems to be self promoting rather than addressing the serious issue of forced reintegration that has left tens of thousands of former orphans highly at risk of re-abondment, abuse, trafficking, dropping out of school, pedophilia, prostitution, and even being murdered with no one following up. I seriously question the motive and statistics reported here.
