Lausanne, Switzerland – The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process is a new monitoring mechanism introduced by the Council of Human Rights at the United Nations. The review of States to be considered at the first and second sessions of the UPR Working Group will begin at the end of April. At this occasion, Switzerland, as the other 192 countries member of the UN, will have to meet the quality requirements in term of Human Rights policy.
For the first time, NGOs were involved in the process and have published a common report on the situation of Human Rights in Switzerland. Terre des hommes – child relief (Tdh), in Lausanne has contributed to the Swiss NGO report which will be sent to the Human Rights Committee at the end of March. With the Child Rights Consortium, Tdh has focused its concerns and priorities on Child Rights in Switzerland.
The main conclusion of the report is the absence of institutional mechanisms to put in place the ratified Conventions. Asylum, victims of human trafficking, child rights, racism, social legislation are the major problems related to Human Rights in Switzerland.
