Ukraine Ukraine must protect detained asylum-seekers attacked by security forces
31 Jan 2012 | asylum deportation detention
‘Amnesty International’ reports on its website that the organization has urged the Ukrainian authorities to stop the ill-treatment of a group of detained asylum-seekers, who were yesterday attacked by security forces attempting to forcibly end a hunger strike. The group includes about 20 children, some of whom are unaccompanied, mostly from Somalia and Eritrea. They have all been sentenced to up to a year of detention “for the purposes of deportation”. However, records show that no Somali or Eritrean nationals have ever been deported from Ukraine.
