Comment: The French newspaper ‘Le Figaro’ reports the willingness demonstrated by the European Union to fight illegal immigration. Brussels Commission and Strasbourg Parliament have submitted to the members a proposal for a more repressive system against illegal immigrants. The hosting conditions of migrants will be more restrictive and the detention length could be up to 18 months if the detainees do not cooperate. Even unaccompanied minors could be detained which is against the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The journalist underlines the two-faced nature of the European Union politics; under cover of a help-to-return policy, Europe clearly states the refusal of migrants from a non-EU country.

The socialist Euro-deputy, Martine Roure, denounced EU for aligning his position towards illegal migrants to the more repressive national legislation. The text is not yet in force and the adoption will probably be delayed until everybody has agreed on it.
