Comment: The newborn country Kosovo will receive up to 1.2 Billion of Euro in aid money between 2009-2011 if all pledges at the Kosovo Donors Conference in Brussels on July 11 are realized.

The EU Enlargement Commissioner Oli Rehn said in the conference the reason the donation to Kosovo was because “Kosovo had committed itself to a tall order of responsibilities. These include: achieving a high standard of protection for human and minority rights, including the rights of Roma communities; improving the socio-economic conditions for all people in Kosovo; good governance, protection of cultural and religious heritage, promotion and development of regional cooperation and a commitment to peace and stability in the region.”

Participants included representatives from all EU Member States, members of the European Parliament, international donors such as the USA, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, Canada, Israel, Kuwait, Korea, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, as well as International Financial Institutions, UN agencies and regional organizations (OSCE, Regional Co-operation Council, NATO, and OECD).
