Comment: Plan of Actions to combat and prevent trafficking in human beings for 2010-2011 has been adopted on current April 22 by the National Committee to combat trafficking in human beings, reports UNIMEDIA. Official data shows that in 2009 there were 247 persons condemned for trafficking in human beings, for 2008 the number is 253 and in first months of 2010 66 persons have been condemned, among which there 61 persons are condemned to the deprivation of liberty. However, during the workshop Mr. Alexandru Tanase, the Moldovan Minister of Justice mentioned that all these data should be put into perspective, because there are some cases when people were condemned for human trafficking, but in fact they were involved into illegal emigration.

Quoting UNIMEDIA news agency, Mr. Iurie Leanca, the President of the National Committee for combating human trafficking, the Vice-Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova highlighted that the cases of the trafficking in human beings should be combated, because of their negative impact on the development of the Republic of Moldova and the dis-confirming reputation they create at the international level.

The news agency added also that Ms Valentina Buliga – the Minister of Labour, Social Protection and Family stressed the importance of creating necessary conditions in order to stop this phenomenon, as well as of some information campaigns that would aware Moldovan people on the risks and forms of trafficking in human beings.

Main factors that make Moldova a country of origin for trafficking in human beings are: poverty, high level of unemployment, lack of parental care, lack of possibilities for proper development of children, etc. According to the OSCE data, most victims of the trafficking are women and girls trafficked for sexual exploitation, about 70 % of them suffered from domestic violence before being trafficked.
