Romania Network of traffickers of minors dismantled in Craiova
January 1, 2001
Comment: The increasing concerns about the situation of Romanian children exploited in the street of the most important Italian cities, reported by the Italian press and the civil society during the summer, are probably behind the arrest of these traffickers in Romania. The newspaper quotes the head of the police in charge of the operation, estimating up to 50 the number of Romanian girls victims of this trafficking ring from Craiova region.
The region of Craiova (SW of the country), where Tdh is implementing a three-year project of prevention against trafficking and exploitation of children, remains one of the most important regions of origin for children victims of trafficking in Rome.
In December 2005, together with FRCCF and CDS (respectively Romanian and Italian NGOs), Tdh published a report entitled “An Increase in Prostitution among Romanian Minors in Rome”. This report denounced clearly the phenomenon of sexual exploitation of Romanian minors in the Italian capital. The findings of this report helped Tdh Delegation in Romania to open prevention activities in the region of Craiova.
This alarming situation is also confirmed recently by the two day visits of the mayor of Rome this summer in Romania who met, amongst others, his counterparts in the city of Craiova in order to foster coordinated efforts to find effective solution to the increasing presence of Romanian children in the streets of Rome.
